Another excuse to throw Auntie Beeb out of a plane…

Interesting doc on BBC 4 on Tuesday 23 September entitled 'The other 9/11' about, yes, Salvador Allende's murder and Pinochet ascension. Interesting in that it was implicitly justifying the military intervention because Allende's policies had led to strikes and some civil unrest. That is likely to happen when you nationalise the banks, but Chileans could have got rid of him in the next presidential election if it had proved to be that unpopular. He wasn't president for long before his murder, sorry, suicide.

There was also no mention of Kissinger/CIA involvement or the kidnapping and assassination (by CIA-sponsored right-wing nuts in the Chilean military) of the leading Chilean general who advocated the military remaining separate from political matters, while Pieceofshit was portrayed as a competent career soldier heading for retirement at the time of the coup, which he was. Only problem was that Allende had appointed Pieceofshit head of the military and didn't realise just how right-wing he was/is. His advisors wanted shooting. Oh, they were.

So the prog was another excuse to refuse to draw any firm conclusions, give major figures in Pieceofshit's junta (bound to be murderers) credibility by interviewing them and not asking them difficult questions ("But then you wouldn't get the interview" - well then they're hiding something then aren't they), show off the 'authentic coup d'etat footage' and essentially get fevered 'liberal' egos like mine all in a lather.

The militant indolence of the ‘Loadedistas’ is a true threat to the stable theocracy that messes Bush and Blair wish to perpetuate throughout the world.

Rather than screaming ‘God is great’ before exploding themselves in liturgically masturbatory fashion on a Jerusalem bus, the discerning Loadedista proclaims (in mockney slur) “God’s a good lad” before viciously farting on a stranger’s head (who, often, in a cruel irony that the Lord On High often tests our faith with, happens to attend Alpha courses in Lambeth), clutching their idolatrous symbol: the Can of Stella (the devil star).

In our church in Shoreditch, we are often shocked to see literally thousands of young Loadedistas, dressed in their narrow range of sports footwear, combat clothing and the strange toupee topiary that slithers down their drug-dulled craniums. I will not give this ‘hairstyle’ the fish moniker that it has on the ‘street’, as this would be an insult to my Jesus.

The complete absence of channelled aggression, political activity and coherent dialogue during a time when my evangenital organisation is growing fast scares the stools out of me. What if they realise that they’re having the urine taken from them in such a consistent and organised fashion, and in a multitude of ways?

The Prime Minister and the President include God in all their sermons to the people and it’s about time that the Loadedistas were rousted from their drinking and drugging hovels and made to read the good book and not ‘Trainspotting’ or any other celebration of Godless existence.

This is anti-social behaviour on a fundamental level. I will be making representation to the government during the passage of their bill on this subject in order to secure an assurance that this trend of somnambulant hedonism does not allow these execrable youths (in fact, some of them are over 32 years of age – older than Jeff Christ himself!) to wake up.

I am making a lot of money from spiritual insecurity and if these loose canons are allowed to wander and meander through society, I think it will become time to take the gloves off and insist on overt religious content in the ‘magazines’ that they so devoutly read. At least ‘The Face’ has already confirmed the necessity of Christian content in youth publications. I have also noticed that some of these worthless bacchanalians do not share my God. Yet the young Europeans do not seem to be concerned at the spiritual jeopardy they are placing themselves in.

It is time for the youth to choose. If they make the wrong choice then we should not be afraid to ignore any future pleas for help. Such is the strength of God.

Project Prevention or Crack – a California-based nationwide organisation which pays drug addicts and alcoholics to be sterilised - is a throwback to the neutering of "defectives" during the 20th century. But Barbara Harris, the woman who runs this not-for-profit programme, believes she is offering a service to everyone: the drug addict, the taxpayer, the child who has not yet been born and, if she has her way, will never be born.

The project targets poor women and men - and as counter organisations such as the National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW) will ask, what sort of choice is it when it's made by someone living in poverty and desperate for money? As the programme approaches its fifth anniversary, Harris also believes she has cause to celebrate. Some 1,050 addicts – white women are the most prolific group - have undergone sterilisation as part of her programme over the past five years. It may not seem a considerable number, but, Harris stresses, the number of clients has more than doubled over the past 12 months.

Harris says: "Basically, despite the initial controversy over the programme, people are starting to accept that it's a good idea. Probation officers, social workers and those who work on drug treatment programmes are increasingly referring their clients to us." (more private firms passing the buck). There is no way of independently verifying the figures given by Project Prevention, nor will the group divulge the names of institutes whose counsellors allegedly refer their clients to the programme - arguing that those people could fall foul of the authorities if their identities were revealed. Volunteers are asked to distribute flyers in their areas. Some prisons - such as the Bernalillo County Detention Center in Albuquerque - have apparently allowed the group to host information sessions for their female inmates, but have stressed that this is not tantamount to a referral.

As it has expanded, the tone of the group has also shifted. Harris, who was quoted in one of her first interviews as saying, "We don't allow dogs to breed. We spay them. We neuter them. We try to keep them from having unwanted puppies, and yet these women are literally having litters of children," has since toned down her language. Her project was initially referred to simply as Crack (Children Requiring A Caring Community). Now it frequently uses the ‘warmer’ term Project Prevention. But the essence of her project remains the same. It offers drug addicts and alcoholics a sum of $200 for opting for a long-term form of birth control, such as sterilisation or a contraceptive implant.

"Our principal aim is to stop children winding up in foster care or with long-term health problems, whose care puts an enormous burden on the taxpayer," says Harris. "If they spend the $200 on drugs, they spend it on drugs. It's none of our business what they do with the money we give them."

Organisations like NAPW say the Crack programme diverts efforts away from helping addicts to become clean. "Barbara Harris couldn't care less about the addicts themselves and what might be best for them. And while it may be dressed up in the language of choice, for them to argue that these people come to them entirely of their own free will is totally disingenuous," says NAPW co-ordinator Wendy Anderson. "The whole project is eugenist, it recalls what went on in the 1930s in America, or even in Nazi Germany."

Laws authorising coerced sterilisations were passed in more than half of US states in the 1930s after lobbying from the US eugenics movement, which sought to further the existence of what it deemed to be the "genetically superior" and prevent reproduction among those it saw as inferior: "the licentious" and "the indolent". Such legislation served as a model for the Nazis' programme of eugenics, which led to the extermination of Jews and the murder of many gypsies, the mentally ill, and homosexuals.

Harris rejects any comparison. "It's just nonsense. Nobody is forcing these people to do anything - it's their own decision, etc etc". Harris also has some influential and wealthy, people on her side. Dr Laura Schlessinger, one of the nation's most popular radio talkshow hosts, has made hefty donations and has frequently plugged the project. Richard Scaife, heir to the Mellon fortune in Pittsburgh, is also reported to have donated, along with Jim Woodhill, a right-wing venture capitalist from Texas. African-American writers favourable to the programme have also helped to rebuff criticism that the programme targets black people.

"It doesn't seem a lot, but the fact is that the group hasn't disappeared or faded away, and people are now starting to get used to it," says NAPW’s Anderson. "As the saying goes: Time makes more converts than reason."
